What Are Common Crystal Phases of Cemented Carbide?

There are three main common crystal phases of cemented carbide:

  1. WC (tungsten carbide): This is the main hard phase. It has high hardness, high melting point and high wear resistance. It is an important component in making cemented carbide.
  2. Co (cobalt): It is a binder that can lower the melting point of the alloy, improve the toughness of the alloy, and also improve the corrosion resistance and oxidation resistance of the alloy.
  3. W2C (tungsten carbide): It is a metastable phase with high hardness, high melting point and good wear resistance, which can enhance the hardness and wear resistance of the alloy.

In addition, there may be other crystal phases in cemented carbide, such as WC-Co (tungsten carbide-cobalt) solid solution, Co-W2C (cobalt-tungsten carbide) solid solution, etc. These crystal phases play an important role in cemented carbide and can affect the mechanical properties, wear resistance and corrosion resistance of the alloy.
